The flanges at the bottom of the pitch pocket are fastened to the top of the roof structure with vertical sections that are fitted around the unit pipes or other rooftop equipment installed on the roof. A pitch pocket is the last resort for sealing a roof penetration. When you have exhausted every possibility for accommodating a roof penetration in a more fool proof way a pitch pocket is the solution. A pitch pocket is simply a sheet metal sleeve flashed into the roofing membrane.

By filling all the gaps between the base of the pocket and the roof the asphalt prevents water from leaking into the roof.
