Warmer weather combined with centrally heated homes has led to carpet moth infestations becoming a year round problem. The carpet moth is smaller than a common house moth. The most common clothes moths are the webbing clothes moth easily identified with a golden colour and around half an inch in length and the case bearing moth which can be identified about inch long and their forewings are mottled brown with one large and a few smaller indistinct black spots.

The initial step in making your carpet moth free is to first identify what the root of the problem actually is. By definition these moths are usually greater than 13 millimeters and less than 19 millimeters in length. The adult moths of this species are about a half inch long and yellowish beige in color.

There are also very common markings on each of them that will help you to identify if they are in fact carpet moths. The best way to keep carpet moths under control is regular thorough hoovering especially in dark forgotten areas behind sofas. Carpet moths can be persistent household pests and we strongly recommend a continual prevention regime. The hind wings are smaller in comparison and lighter coloured.

Vacuuming your carpet can help you remove some moth eggs and larvae completely. You should be especially aware of the cloth moth as this is the type of moth that would love to feast on your priceless heirloom. They are one of the worst enemies of any fine rug especially older and antique rugs.
